my kpop overview

i would catch a grenade for them:
okay anyways i just have to say it's so funny to me that i'm so into enha the way i am. actually obsessed even after half a year. i'm not the type to watch every single content that's released from a group + i'm (personally) notoriously terrible at watching vlives because there's so much empty space and silence and i just get bored lol but with enha? what the hell. everything they do is intriguing to me everything they say is hilarious, and like, it's definitely gotten a lot better ever since the summer but even their general awkwardness was incredibly endearing me, like it was a SELLING POINT to me somehow. i've never been so into a group like i have with them it's kinda insane 2 be h
ever since the end of 2020 i was losing interest in bts in that 'i've gotten so comfortable around you that i don't need to know or see everything you're doing all the time' kind of loss in interest, and that had me thinking that maybe i've ""matured"" as a kpop stan and i'm living my own life or whatever that means. then BOOM enha happened and i haven't been able to shut the fuck up about them ever since! way to prove myself wrong. border: carnival (up ver.) and border: day one (dusk ver.) were the first kpop albums i ever bought holy shit...i bought them 1 month into stanning enha TALK ABOUT MOVING QUICKLY INTO A RELATIONSHIP...i got a lenticular prince jungwon pc out of it :DDDDDDD
if i'd written this up back during the summer, fever 100000% would have been #1 (niki's chorus carried), but i overplayed the fuck out of that song and it doesn't have enough substance for me anymore T-T gbogh was revolutionary to me tho. idk if i'll ever post my dimension: dilemma thoughts but to briefly get into it i realize now that i fuckin dig british dance music + the fake drop into the super light and arrogant chorus is quite literally everything to me. AND ATTENTION, PLEASE! HAS 2 JAY CHORUSES likeee c'mon now of course i'd like it (and heeseung's "jeom jeom"...HEESEUNG'S "JEOM JEOM"...). another funny thing is that i remember being soo into sunoo's first part in given-taken when i first listened to it, before i even got into enha, and here he is as my bias haha i am nothing if not consistent

top 10 songs:
1. telepathy
2. love is not over (full length edition)
3. intro: serendipity
4. trivia: love
5. save me
6. autumn leaves
7. outro: wings
8. anpanman
9. crystal snow
10. burning up (fire)
i had a realization at 2 am during the summer that telepathy was my favorite bts song. it's so uncompromisingly happy - bts have a lot of reassuring/uplifting/positive songs, but i would argue they don't have an abundance of songs that are simply happy, so telepathy really sticks out to me in that regard. i am an anxious ball of constant depressy and a decent chunk of my music taste reflects that, but i think at the end of the day some of my favorite songs tend to also be the happiest. (not to mention, this year i realized that my music tastes have shifted from sad, mellow guitar music to sad indie funk music that i can groove to while they sing about how sad they are, and telepathy fits that happy funk vibe.) also fire isn't super super one of my favorite songs 2 be h but it was definitely the first bts song i can recall hearing all the way back in 2016 (i got into them dec 2017) so it holds a special place in my heart. bow wow wow.
ALSO one thing that has remained stuck in my mind is when itzy was on weekly idol for their not shy promotions i think and they were lowkey a mess LOL <3 the hosts were like what is going onnn and itzy were like we're just so happy to talk to other people for once. all we do is talk to each other all the time bc it's all we know how to do - or something along those lines and i don't think i'm explaining it well at all bc obv since they're a group they'll be together all the time and therefore talk all the time and also covid (and i'm too lazy to search for the moment), but there was something there about them acting like a group of close school friends. that's the energy they give off to me frfr i love them
biases: ryujin, lia
top 10 songs:
1. sooo lucky
2. that's a no no
3. love is
4. nobody like you
5. shoot!
6. surf
7. icy
8. cherry
9. i don't wanna dance
10. kidding me
sooo lucky is complete and utter american coming-of-age roadtrip music and i fucking LOVE it it gets me so hyped. and god i hate to say it but like prior to the guess who ep a LOT of their songs suffered from what i have dubbed the USS - the unfinished song syndrome, wherein i feel like either the instrumental is really lacking in substance or the lyrics + melody are incredibly repetitive (also tfw when you hated dalla dalla when it first came out...i typically end up disliking every other title track and i FINALLY found out why - they're all produced by galactika 😒 yea their sound is not for me.) granted itzy generally killed it don't get me wrong, but when you get several eps where the songs are like that it gets tiring. and maybe you're asking why shoot! is in my top 5 when the melodic topline is practically the same throughout the whole song and it kinda ends prematurely...well, all i've got to say is that shoot! totally outsold okay itzy's confidence and delivery is literally unparalleled i refuse to argue on this
ALSO hearing the members' delivery improve between the comebacks is literally so fun. i'd say that everyone's a good to great rapper (YUNA'S VERSE IN #TWENTY...) and trust me (midzy) really blew me away with their vocals + harmonies, especially yeji!! and chaeryeong is out here living her lead vocalist dreams like 🤤
i don't quite stan but the music's good + i know the members' personalities:
and i'm gonna be totally honest for a while i never quite clicked with txt as a group dynamic/individually, and i couldn't tell you why. i will say tho that their variety presence this year has been fucking amazing they're so funny and loud. also their tiktok is an amazing mess to witness?? anyway i might actually get into them outside of their music at some point idk
biases: kai, beomgyu
top 10 songs:
1. magic island
2. can't we just leave the monster alive?
3. 0x1=lovesong (i know i love you)
4. 9 and three quarters (run away)
5. our summer
6. magic
7. wishlist
8. ghosting
9. eternally
10. blue hour
sometimes a new txt song will come out and i'll question if magic island is still my fave txt song, but then i'll listen to it and tear up all over again sooo suffice to say that it definitely is. (that "i miss you, i miss you" adlib at the end gets me Every Goddamn Time).
also cwjltma was probably at #8 when i first configured this list, but in ~october i made a lyric video of this song for myself for fun and i Understood this song for the first time. it was the mixture of seeing their live performance/expressions + seeing the lyrics and comprehending them in time with the music that genuinely reconfigured the entire way i'd viewed this song like it's so...fucking tragic to me and i want to cry. the pure yearning to stay in this fantasy world because it feels so much better than growing up...the idea that we don't have to say conformed to our roles and, hey, maybe the monster in this game is good, maybe we should just leave them alive...the continued affirmation that despite all of this inner turmoil, IT'LL BE ALRIGHT...brb i'm gonna go cry some more
twice
their artistic evolution over time has been something genuinely amazing to witness. the concept, the sound, the members' contributions in lyricism and production. i can never fully get into their variety content for some reason but that's fine, listening to their music more than makes up for it <3 also can we PLEASE get more tzuyu lines my girl has some vocal chords okay

3. love foolish
4. girls like us

HANDLE IT IS SO TRAGIC AND THE CHORUS MAKES ME TRANSCEND (amu maldo duelliji ana...neo doraege doel geoya...deo meoreojijima naegeseo - that melody is SO. IT'S SO. !!!) and i just, loveee the way it ends all jazzy n shit. god, handle it is such a good song. love foolish is iconic and i'm eternally grateful to momo for it. DEJAVU i feel like no one talks about dejavu enough it's like 3 different songs put together in that typical kpop way but IT ACTUALLY WORKS and it makes me feel so nostalgic like i can breathe in the cool summer sea air idk it's so good to me. and just like fire, what is love? isn't super super a fave song of mine but it was the first twice comeback i witnessed and i've been enamored ever since.
the music's good + i know the members' names:
top 5 songs:
hush makes me feel like crying every time i hear it?! it actually has the same effect cwjltma has on me - wanting to run away from the pains and expectations of growing up, let's run away together and find the secrets of this hidden world. can you sense a theme in what i enjoy. (also: "shh, monsters become a good thing" i am OBSESSED with these 2 songs' concept of monsters actually being the ones who protect, the ones we might become. obviously in a metaphorical fantastical sense but it's just so delicious i gobble it right up)
maybe scratches my brain in ALL of the right places omfg. in my simple and unqualified opinion, i think that empty choruses are totally fine if the instrumental you repeat is worth listening to AND THIS ONE IS SO WORTH LISTENING TO [clenches fist] the push and pull within the lyrics of this relationship that's at its seams and you're like "i love you, maybe, maybe i don't"- and you have the repeated mantra of "maybe" that's intermittently interrupted by this rushed whisper of "i love you" IT'S SO GOOD
listen the album makes me laugh every time i think about it just because the title is literally "the album" like ?? dude. and it only has 8 songs. but whatever lovesick girls gave me everything i could've wanted from blackpink - the chanted chorus, the retro sound, THAT PRECHORUS AND BRIDGE AND OUTRO T-T good shit good shit

oh my! gives me the same unfiltered giddiness that i think pretty u gives to other people :'))
life is still going on LITERALLY saved me this year i'm not even joking likeeee it's so simple but the lines "don't stop the music, why are you stopping it? dj play the next song" ACTUALLY CHANGED ME. i was Very Depressed when i first heard this song and it reminded me that like, idk there will always be a next favorite song that you'll fall in love with [or insert whatever thing u may like] and it had me like, yea, life DOES still go on. at least long enough for me to play the next song T-T

i didn't pay any mind to i-land when it was airing last year (i don't like survival shows) so i listened to given-taken when they debuted, loved it, and moved on with my life lol. fast forward to april when drunk-dazed provided one of the best choruses of all time and i was like okay what is this group all about. i started watching some enha interview vids/variety content but then concluded that the best introduction to them would probably be i-land, so i watched that in what i'd consider a fever dream of a week in may bc i got SO hooked omfg...kinda embarrassing maybe looking back but wow say what u will about the editing/the voting system/the training etc, the concept and the drama was so captivating. and sorry to mention potassium on the tl but when he accidentally sent taki to the ground...big fat tears okay. ps sunjake + youngbin's performance of crown genuinely recontextualized my relationship with that song. sunoo added that melancholic flair imo?? and i Understood it.okay anyways i just have to say it's so funny to me that i'm so into enha the way i am. actually obsessed even after half a year. i'm not the type to watch every single content that's released from a group + i'm (personally) notoriously terrible at watching vlives because there's so much empty space and silence and i just get bored lol but with enha? what the hell. everything they do is intriguing to me everything they say is hilarious, and like, it's definitely gotten a lot better ever since the summer but even their general awkwardness was incredibly endearing me, like it was a SELLING POINT to me somehow. i've never been so into a group like i have with them it's kinda insane 2 be h

bts
bts are what got me into kpop ~4 years ago and i spent a good long 3.5 years ulting them. they have a very, very special place in my heart <3 i don't have very much to say now except that [taylor swift voice] now i'll watch your life in pictures like i used to watch you sleep ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ ever since i stopped ardently following them i feel like they've grown so much without me...furthered their steps into their solo careers, jungkook got bam, THEY HAVE INSTAGRAM ACCOUNTS NOW AND IT FEELS MORE PERSONAL THAN EVER...i'm a tad bit emotional okaybias line: jimin, jungkook, yoongi

itzy
ITZAYYYYY these girls are so good together like their chemistry is so magnetic to me. i can't tell if this is something very basic of me to value but they entertain each other so well? they genuinely don't seem to get bored around each other + can just keep talking and i think that's something to be treasured in a group dynamic bc it's not something that can always come so naturally or be so comfortable.ALSO one thing that has remained stuck in my mind is when itzy was on weekly idol for their not shy promotions i think and they were lowkey a mess LOL <3 the hosts were like what is going onnn and itzy were like we're just so happy to talk to other people for once. all we do is talk to each other all the time bc it's all we know how to do - or something along those lines and i don't think i'm explaining it well at all bc obv since they're a group they'll be together all the time and therefore talk all the time and also covid (and i'm too lazy to search for the moment), but there was something there about them acting like a group of close school friends. that's the energy they give off to me frfr i love them

txt *subject to change
i took a gander at the dream chapter: star when they debuted and thought it was neat, but then the dream chapter: magic came out and like literally changed my life LMAOO that album is sooo fuckin revolutionary, as is the rest of their music. i LOVE their horror-adjacent fantasy concept sososo much. like, do i have any idea of what's going on in the storyline? not at all - yeonjun keeps dying and there's a cat and kai might be the devil? - something like that. but god do i love the visuals and the artistic direction of their videos + photoshoots they're all things to drool overand i'm gonna be totally honest for a while i never quite clicked with txt as a group dynamic/individually, and i couldn't tell you why. i will say tho that their variety presence this year has been fucking amazing they're so funny and loud. also their tiktok is an amazing mess to witness?? anyway i might actually get into them outside of their music at some point idk
